Trump’s campaign reported that he was doing “fine” after being shot in the upper part of his right ear. "I knew immediately something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound and felt the bullet rip through the skin," Trump posted on his social media site. The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect, but the motive remains unknown.

The incident resulted in one death and two critically injured attendees, all men. The Secret Service confirmed they neutralized the shooter, who had attacked from an elevated position outside the rally venue in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Trump was flown to New Jersey after receiving medical attention in Pennsylvania. A video posted by an aide showed Trump deplaning his private jet, surrounded by heavily armed Secret Service agents.

Texas leaders and Trump supporters expressed outrage and relief on social media. "What a horrible and scary situation," said Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan. Attorney General Ken Paxton and Senator Ted Cruz also condemned the violence and expressed their support for Trump.

President Biden called the incident "sick" and emphasized that political violence has no place in America. The Biden campaign temporarily paused its communications out of respect for the situation.

Congressional leaders from both parties swiftly condemned the attack. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed their relief that Trump was safe and reiterated that political violence is unacceptable.

The FBI and Pennsylvania State Police are leading the ongoing investigation, with no additional threats identified at this time. Trump’s campaign confirmed that the Republican National Convention would still be held as planned, with Trump set to name his running mate.
